Square to celebrate Opening

06.23.1976

NEW PROVIDENCE- The newest of the old will open its arms of hospitality, June 26th as Historic Murray Hill Square, the colonial shopping village here celebrates its Grand Opening. 6-23-76

In various phases of completion for three years, Phase I is now complete. To mark this exciting addition to the com- munity several state and local officials and historians will preside over a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. Included. among the honored guests will be the Honorable-Mayor of New Providence, Edward Bien and possibly New Jersey State Governor Brendan T. Byrne.. And in keeping with the Square's already established reputation for a wide variety of shopping values all of the shops are having a one day sale for the Grand Opening. The courtyards will be filled with the music of an 1800's calliope and the delightful sounds of a band organ of the same era.

Hosts of the Square will offer guided tours throughout the day and a continuous slide show and discussion about the development of the Square will take place in the Academy.

Birch beer will be available to wash down those huge soft pretzels while you watch any one of several local artisans demonstrating some of the arts and crafts of colonial times.

Murray Hill Square is decided departure from modern shopping centers in that it concentrates on small, quaint shops in individual buildings rather than the concrete and steel of giant malls of today. All of the buildings at the square are restorations or reproductions of colonial and post colonial America. Of the 19 buildings that once existed in the New Providence area. In keeping with the decidedly warm atmosphere of the brick walks, old English streetlights, and softly painted buildings, the shops themselves are a haven of friendship and hospitality.
