Ski And Sports Shop To Open

MURRAY HILL - "F. B. Totten Painting, Decorating, Wallpaper for Sale" a sign once touted on the Totten 1800's house in New Providence will soon be replaced by "Hammell's Ski & Sports" in the authentic reproduction at Murray Hill Square.

The first son of David and Abby Isabel Bedford Totten, Frank Totten was born on Feb. 25, 1865 in New Providence.

The Totten family first came to America in the 17th century and resided in Hempstead, Long Island. The family settled in this area prior to the French and Indian War.

Six generations later Frank Totten emerged on the family tree as did his 10 brothers and sisters. He married Lulu Woodruff and had a son, Carl.

By trade a painter, wallpaper hanger and interior decorator, Frank Totten added homey" touches to local residents' houses. Along with is full-time position, Totter served with hose company No. 1 of the New Providence fire department from 1902 until 1910. He was also active in the firemen's exempt association, the Starry Council, and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, an organization of white collar and skilled workers.

The Totten family settled in New Providence at 1286 Springfield Ave. Settled in this large house, Totten posted the sign describing his business. To supplement his income Frank Totten ran a poolroom and served soft drinks and peanuts.

Hammell's Ski & Sports will carry a full line of tennis equipment, camping items, a range of ski equipment for the novice to the expert, sportswear, and. offer complete repair services and checks on skis and ski outfits.
